Lent

It's Lent. Do you know what that means? Neither did I until I saw my favorite childhood funny man Pee-Wee Herman teach me on Conan O'Brian the other night.

*skip to 5:15 to the meat of the lesson.... the rest is not related

Ok, so maybe his story was not 100% true, though it was funny. Ironically enough just days before this aired I was having a discussion with my co-workers over lunch about Easter and why the date of Easter moves around so much. This prompted research and further discussions about the meaning of Easter.
I shared with them that I grew up with a family that believed in nothing. We never went to church of any kind and to be honest, everything I learned about Jesus and his life I learned from the musical "Jesus Christ Superstar." Sad but true. I actually, at the age of 30, thought it ended there... that he died on the cross and that was all. Little did I know he rose again according to the Christian religion. This then prompted me to feel horrible about my lack of knowledge and I suggested an educational program for staff members working here because I think, working for an organization such as this, we should all (including me) know the basics. Gretchen has since offered Sunday school for us (well, for me since I apparently know the least) and then this amazing Sunday school-ish lesson appears on my tv just days later. After an entire day in the office of discussing religion and Jesus and his life, a point was made - it's not that hard. "We just talked about our views and opinions and shared what we know and don't know for over 2 hours so why can't our members do that?" Nobody, even me, walked away feeling belittled or bad - we actually felt enlightened and I felt supported intellectually and spiritually by my co-workers. Not the place I would expect these types of conversations to happen though but that's what Phi Kappa Theta has fostered for us in the office. Why can't the brotherhood relationship foster that for you out there? What do you now know about Easter and lent? How can you share the level of importance it has on your life? Please... share with us in a comment!
